Operation Lifesaver, Inc. is
a nationwide, non-profit public information program dedicated to eliminating
collisions, injuries and fatalities at highway-rail crossings and on railroad
rights-of-way. Their web site offers news reports, educational materials, statistics,
safety tips, upcoming events, and information on how to get involved.
Safety Partners
Poway-Midland Railroad Volunteers, Inc. is proud to have been an active
participant organization in Operation Lifesaver (OL) since 1994.
We are affiliated with the California State Operation Lifesaver organization
as a Safety Partner. Through a dedicated team of volunteer presenters, we have
provided instruction on railroad safety procedures to many hundreds of children
at our facilities in Old Poway Park and to adults at other locations all over
San Diego County.
The Program
- The OL railroad safety progam (30 minutes) is specially designed to
educate the public, both young and old, about the hazards of trains and proper
railroad safety. Videos and flip chart presentations are included. This
nationally-acclaimed program is conducted by OL-certified presenters from PMRRV
and is FREE to all age groups. It has proved to have particular appeal to many
local schools, who include it in their curriculum as an enjoyable and worthwhile
field trip.
- In addition to the OL program, a 30-minute Train Ride and Train Barn Tour
is available for a modest charge. You will see our 1907 Baldwin 0-4-0 steam
locomotive, 1894 Los Angeles Yellow Line trolley and 1906 San Francisco cable car,
plus an 1880s Rider Hot-Air Pumping Engine......
AND you will ride three times around Old Poway Park in ore cars pulled
by our 1950 Fairmont Speeder.
- OL Programs and associated Tours are given only for parties of 20 or more and
only on weekdays, Monday - Friday, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Visits
must be scheduled at least 45 days in advance. To get more information, see
